I always struggle finding things to do when I'm not in a dungeon or actively pursuing a quest. Having ideas of what I can do written out for me really helps. I just want to add a disclaimer that this isn't an exhaustive list of things you can do when not fighting monsters, this is just some examples to help you keep the game rolling.
Here are camp actions, designed as a table:
When traveling, at night you may take one camp action.
1 You can spend time with your fellow scouts, which will give you +1 to friendship
2 You may go to bed early and rest and get a +1 to HP for the next battle (does not stack)
3 You may forage for ingredients from nearby, find d4 ingredients (roll on Ingredients Table).
4 You may search for d4 Rations.
5 You may sharpen or clean your weapon which will give it a +1 to attack rolls the next battle (does not stack).
6 You may go fishing if near body of water for d6 Rations if you have a fishing rod.
7 May create a potion using Alchemy with an empty Glass Vial, or a random scroll if you have 100c and Divinite Paper.
8 Can practice an art:
Every 20 talent points go up a level in your chosen art and your work is worth more.
Need to work on piece of art 5 times each before it's ready to sell or perform. Can also give art or performance to another character as a gift worth +3 Friendship Points.
Painting/Drawing
Singing
Dancing
Writing Poetry/Stories
Sewing Toys/Clothes
Woodcarving
Level One Talent: Work is worth 100c
Level Two Talent: Work is worth 200c
Level Three Talent: Work is worth 300c
Level Four Talent: Work is worth 400c
Level Five Talent: Work is worth 500c
So what do these activities actually mean? Let's go through them one by one.
1 Spend time with fellow Scouts. In Colossus, you have a relationship level with each Scout you have in or out of your party. You automatically gain +1 to your relationship each day you travel with them, but if you want an extra relationship point you can spend time with them at camp. Building relationships is good for roleplaying as well as ensuring this person will want to join your party again in the future.
2 Go to bed early. If you decide to go to bed early, you get a temporary +1 to your HP. This does not stack. Going to bed early two nights in a row will not net you +2 to HP.
3 Forage for ingredients. This is a good one that I use a lot. Basically you forage for ingredients to make potions or grenades. You roll a d4 to see how many ingredients you've found, then you roll on the ingredients table to see which ones you've found.
4 Search for Rations. This is another one I use a lot to save money on Rations. You can forage for d4 Rations. You roll a d4 to see how many you've found.
5 Sharpen or clean your weapon. You may sharpen or clean your weapon, which will give it +1 to your attack rolls in the next battle. Like going to bed early, this bonus does not stack.
6 Go fishing. If you have a fishing rod, you may go fishing for d6 Rations. If you don't have a fishing rod, this option isn't open to you.
7 Make a potion or scroll. If you have the Alchemy skill and a Glass Vial, you can make a potion using ingredients while at camp. If you have Divinite Paper and 100c, you may make a random scroll.
8 Practice an art. This is more for roleplaying and making money. You can practice an art, whatever art you choose whether it's music, dancing, painting, sculpting, or anything. The description above is pretty self-explanatory. You can sell your art when it's done or give it to a friend for an extra +3 relationship points.
So that's camp activities. Let's move onto settlement activities. Again, this is not an exhaustive list. This should just give you ideas of what to do when you're stuck in civilization.
Things to do in a settlement:
1 Sell loot and buy equipment.
2 Explore (Roll d100 on Urban Encounter Table)
3 Hire Scouts at the tavern.
4 Pick up quests.
5 Practice an art.
6 Make a scroll or potion if you have the materials and/or money.
7 Hire a mount or vehicle.
8 Spend time with fellow Scouts. Roll to see who's here.
9 Learn a new Miracle from a scroll.
10 Rest at an inn for 10c a person.
Let's go over the activities.
1 Sell loot and buy equipment. This one is pretty obvious. You're sure to acquire lots of loot out in the wasteland. There's also three different categories of items to buy from: Common, Uncommon, and Rare, as well as potions.
2 Explore. I haven't posted my Urban Encounter Table yet, but I will! There's about 100 encounters that can happen to you while you're in a city or village or town. You roll a d100 on the table and see what random event happens.
3 Hire Scouts. To hire Scouts for the next few days or however long it takes to complete a quest, you go to the tavern. You roll a d6 for each character there (there will always be 8 Scouts at a tavern, you'll roll on a table to see who's there) to see if they are willing to join you. The result will be based off of your relationship score with that person. A good squad of Scouts is about four, counting the Main Character.
4 Pick up quests. I have two different quest tables that I use. One is more specific about a quest, the other is more abstract and for coming up with ideas for quests. You can roll on whichever table you prefer. I'll post the tables I use for Colossus soon.
5 Practice an art. Just like at camp, you can spend a whole day practicing your art.
6 Make a potion or scroll. Now that you are in civilization, the Alchemy skill is not necessary to make a potion, but you still need a Glass Vial. Luckily the market is right over there. You can also make a random scroll if you have Divinite Paper and 100c.
7 Hire a vehicle. You can hire a horse, motorcycle, car, boat, or airship while in a major city, and a horse or motorcycle while in a town or village. Each vehicle comes with its own rules, which I'll detail another time.
8 Spend time with Scouts. Just like with hiring Scouts, you go to the tavern and see who's here. Then you roll a d6 to see if they want to spend the day with you. If they do, add +1 to your relationship.
9 Learn a Miracle. You learn Miracles from scrolls in this game while you are safe in civilization. You can sell your scrolls if you don't like the Miracle, give it to another Scout if it matches their play style better, or you can learn it for yourself, using up the scroll.
10 Rest at an inn. Resting at an inn for 10c per person is the only way outside of potions and items to heal yourself and to get rid of negative side effects. Even if you rest in camp, you only regain 1 HP a day and don't shake off any side effects you've picked up. If you buy a home, you can rest there for free.
So that's the activities you can do while in camp or in a settlement in Colossus. If you have more ideas, I'd love to hear them! Leave your ideas in the comments.
